Friday 17th February marked # SchoolsGoOrange Day. The national event aims to promote mental health awareness in secondary schools. The message that ‘It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help@ was theme for the afternoon’s activities which were organised for 5th year students.
The importance of being active was highlighted. Brian Stenson, who has vast experience with the GAA in Co. Roscommon and is currently manager of The Hub in Castlerea, gave an outline of the many local activities available for young people in Castlerea- ranging from golfing at one end to boxing in The Hub at the other end of town. Following this Sara Sharkey, a 5th year student, drew from her own experiences and spoke about the benefits of being involved in volunteering and organising local events.
Students were divided into groups and each group participated in yoga, physical exercises in the gym and finally a talk on the triggers of and management of stress.
The students had a fun and enjoyable afternoon and hopefully they gained new tools and strategies to deal with the stresses of life and have a new confidence to know that it’s always ok to ask for help.
A special word of thanks again to Brian and Sara, also to Teresa Raftery for facilitating the Yoga and Emma Hughes for her words of wisdom on being ‘Stressless’. And finally thanks to Pascal, Market Fresh for providing the fruit (oranges!) for Orange Day.
Thanks to all the teachers who helped to coordinate the afternoon’s activities.
