Career Guidance

Castlerea Community School recognizes that the issue of student Guidance is an integral part of the school’s activity that embraces the entire school, teachers and subject areas.

The aims of Guidance are to support students in their personal and social, educational and vocational development.

Formal Taught Aspect of Guidance

Each senior student is timetabled for one Guidance class per week.   In Leaving Cert the classes consist of the study of the CAO forms and system, career decision making, information on various courses and areas of study, etc.

Non Classroom Based Guidance

The Guidance teacher organises one to one meetings with students, attendance at Open Days and Careers’ Exhibitions, visiting personnel from different organizations and colleges.

Counselling is a core area of the Guidance Programme.  The aim of counselling is to empower students to look for new and appropriate methods of coping with the challenges of life.  The Guidance Counsellor has undertaken professional development in the area of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which she implements through her 1:1 meetings with students.  The Guidance Counsellor works closely with the school chaplain in this area.

The Guidance teacher consults with relevant other school personnel as appropriate.  All students receive guidance support as necessary and appropriate to coincide with transition stages, e.g. 1st Years choosing Junior Cert subjects, 5th Year Options, etc.
