Agricultural Science Farm Visits

On Tuesday 8th September, the CCS Sixth Year Agricultural Science Students visited two local farms to gain valuable experience and information for their project work and practical assessment. The first half of the day was spent on Naughtons tillage farm in Fuerty, Co. Roscommon. Here Eddie and Michael, kindly shared their time and in-depth knowledge to afford students the opportunity to gain the on-farm experience required for their crop project. In a jam-packed morning of note taking, highlights of the visit included an up-close demonstration of the very impressive Deutz-Fahr Combine and Lely Welger baler. Another excellent aspect to the visit enabled students to observe the 20 tonne batch dryer in operation.

For the second part of the trip, they visited the O’Donovans dairy farm just outside Ballymoe. With the dairy industry featuring heavily in the media at present, this visit showcased some of the major advances in the sector. The highlight of this visit was undoubtedly the Lely Astronaut robotic milking machine. Here students observed the robot efficiently milking several cows and the ‘stockmen’ in the class were amazed at how relaxed the cows were. Farm owners James and Mary explained how the technology featured in the machine assists in heat detection of the cows and in the early detection of mastitis. Farm visits such as these are at the heart of the Agricultural Science and it was inspiring to witness students engaging and learning in such an active manner.
