“Business community joins Castlerea CS in recognising academic achievement”

Castlerea Community School, along with representatives from Harmac Medical, Castlerea Credit Union and Corrib Oil, recently welcomed back a number of students from the classes of 2020 and 2021 to recognise their outstanding performance in the Leaving Cert examinations.

A total of eighteen students who achieved 500 points or more in the Leaving Cert were presented with bursaries and a plaque to mark their achievement and to support them as they continue their education in a variety of third level institutions throughout the country, pursuing studies in medicine, science, biomedicine, business, law, teaching, medicine, arts and a range of other areas.

Speaking of the students’ achievements, Principal Eileen Ryan said that the results were a testimony not only to the students’ academic ability and hard work, but also to their parents who supported their children throughout their years in school and who instilled in them an appreciation of learning and a positive work ethic. She explained that all of the recipients were exemplary students throughout their time at CCS and had served as excellent role models to the younger student population. She also pointed out that the students involved had not only excelled academically but had been involved in all facets of school life, participating in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and contributing to the school community.

Ms. Ryan also paid tribute to the teaching staff at Castlerea CS who equipped the students with the skills and preparation necessary to succeed and who worked so hard to deliver excellent teaching and learning both in the face-to-face classroom and in the online environment. She pointed out that the manner in which these students and their teachers pivoted so successfully to online learning demonstrates a resilience and adaptability that will stand to the students as they pursue their further education and future careers.

The presentation of bursaries to Leaving Cert students who achieve academic excellence is an annual occasion at Castlerea CS and is usually marked at a formal event. This was not possible in 2020 and 2021, so on this occasion the students were invited to visit the school for the presentation of cheques and plaques and a photo call.

The sponsors for this year’s bursaries are Harmac Medical, Castlerea Credit Union, Corrib Oil and the Board of Management of Castlerea CS. Harmac Medical has been the anchor sponsor of the annual event and, along with Castlerea Credit Union, has been extremely generous in its sponsorship of the bursaries over the past number of years. Joining Harmac Medical and Castlerea Credit Union for this year’s event was Corrib Oil who also generously contributed to the event. We would also like to thank Benny’s Deli for their sponsorship of the plaques. The students, parents and staff of Castlerea CS would like to thank the sponsors for their ongoing support of the school and students and their ongoing commitment to academic excellence in their sponsorship of the bursaries. Present for the photo call were Orla Clarke & Carl McEnroe (Harmac Medical), Ursula Cunnane (Castlerea Credit Union), Jimmy Kearney (Corrib Oil), Madeline O’ Connell & Amanda Soares (BOM Castlerea CS). They were joined by Eileen Ryan (Principal), Jarlath Burke (Deputy Principal), Eileen Callaghan & Rosaleen Reilly (Year Heads) and Ann Marie Quinn (Guidance Counsellor).

Students at Castlerea CS have achieved tremendous results in the Leaving Cert examinations and have received over €30,000 in scholarships over the past two years, including NUIG Excellence scholarships, the Pauline & Bunny Jones Scholarships and the Sligo IT Sports scholarship. This is a tremendous achievement for all students involved and for their teachers and parents who supported them throughout their years at Castlerea CS.
