Public Speaking Competition

A group of Second Year students are participating in a public speaking competition organised by The Western Region Drug and Alcohol Task Force. This is a regional public speaking project involving nine secondary schools in Roscommon, Mayo and Galway. This project helps to address concerns about young people’s attitudes to alcohol and also endeavour to reduce the frequency and amount of underage drinking that takes place.

We held an in-house competition in the school just before Easter. Speakers addressed the First year group and the topic discussed was Alcohol and young people –  the parental role. The speakers spoke candidly about the dangers of underage and excessive drinking. They examined the role of parents and spoke about the crucial role parents have in keeping our young people well informed, supported and safe around alcohol use.

The standard of delivery was exceptionally high on the day. The students were well researched, confident and eloquent. Well done to all the team – researchers, speakers and mentors. Congratulations to Katelyn Hester who will go forward to represent our school in the county finals on Thursday, 19th April 2018. Thanks to Ms. Larkin and Mr. Nealon for organising this event and mentoring the students.
